These are the travel tools we use to plan our trips, find places to stay and get around. We travel mostly by public transport, so many of these resources help us compare routes, book trains and buses, and plan car-free journeys.
Getting Around
We usually start by comparing different ways of getting from one place to another, especially when travelling between cities or crossing borders. Here are some of the tools we regularly use when planning our journeys.
Google Flights
We use Google Flights to compare flight routes, schedules and fares before deciding which option works best for our trip.
Rome2Rio
Rome2Rio is useful for getting a quick overview of how to travel between two places and seeing possible combinations of trains, buses, ferries and flights.
Trainline
We have used Trainline to search for and book train journeys, especially when we wanted a simpler way to navigate different rail operators and booking systems. Booking fees may apply, so we check the total price before booking.
Omio
We use Omio to compare transport options and have also booked journeys through the platform. It can be useful for seeing different ways of making the same journey in one place.
FlixBus
We check FlixBus for long-distance bus connections between cities and destinations.
National and Local Transport Operators
We also check and often book directly with national and local transport operators, such as SJ in Sweden, Trenitalia in Italy and ALSA in Spain. For local transport, we use the official operator’s website or app whenever possible.
Where We Stay
We usually use Booking.com when looking for accommodation. Since most of our trips are car-free, good public transport connections are important to us. We also look for essential amenities, check the overall rating and, importantly, read the latest guest reviews before booking. Location, practical facilities and easy connections are usually key factors in our choice.
Things to Do
We usually explore independently, but sometimes a guided tour, walking tour or pre-booked activity can add something extra to a trip. We have booked tours and activities through both Booking.com and GetYourGuide, depending on what is available at the destination. We usually compare the options, timings and recent reviews before booking.
Ferries and Cruises
Living in Stockholm has also made ferry travel a regular part of some of our trips. We have used overnight ferries and cruises to travel around the Baltic, combining the journey with short city breaks and day trips.
Viking Line
We have travelled with Viking Line on Baltic Sea routes from Stockholm, using the ferry both as part of the journey and for short cruise trips.
Tallink Silja Line
We have also travelled with Tallink Silja Line from Stockholm for overnight ferry and cruise trips around the Baltic.
